Why does classification matter?

If a worker is an employee, you are required to withholdpayroll taxesfrom the employee’s paychecks. You must also deposit the payroll taxes. At the end of the year, you have to send the employee aForm W-2,显示员工为全年的工资和扣除。

If a worker is an independent contractor, you do not have to withhold any payroll taxes from the contractor’s wages. The 1099 worker is responsible for sending in their独立承包商税。在年底,您将发送一个Form 1099-MISC, which shows how much you paid the contractor during the year.
